In January, Canada's exports of automobiles, parts, and oil to the United States reached an all-time high, propelling the country to its largest trade surplus since May 2022. This surplus stood at CAD 4 billion, a significant jump from the CAD 1.7 billion recorded in December. Both Canadian exports and imports hit record peaks that month, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth. The surge in exports to the U.S. was primarily fueled by a robust increase in key commodities such as automobiles and parts, energy products, and consumer goods. These figures underscore the influence of uncertainties surrounding former U.S. President Trump's tariff policies on trade dynamics and business strategies, with exporters and importers actively seeking to mitigate the potential cost increases associated with heightened tariffs.
