As Tesla accelerates the rollout of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology across European markets, the company has renamed its supervised FSD version to Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) on official websites in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and other regions. This rebranding aims to mitigate potential confusion stemming from the original name. Meanwhile, the European Union-wide approval process for FSD has been delayed, with a vote now expected no earlier than December—despite individual EU member states having already authorized certain assisted driving features.
In China, Tesla similarly rebranded its FSD-related offerings as Tesla Assisted Driving in May 2024. However, the timeline for an official launch remains ambiguous, though preparatory work is actively underway. To diversify revenue streams, Tesla has shifted its assisted driving software from a one-time purchase model to a subscription-based service across multiple markets. China and Europe are anticipated to be pivotal growth regions for this subscription strategy in the coming phase.
Industry analysts suggest that if Tesla introduces this feature in China, it could trigger a "catfish effect," encouraging broader adoption of intelligent driving software subscriptions and driving structural shifts in the industry’s business models. This move may also accelerate user habit formation around advanced driver-assistance systems, reshaping market dynamics in the process.
