On October 9, Nikkei News reported that Honda has opted to acquire fully assembled vehicles from Mitsubishi Motors, leveraging an OEM (original equipment manufacturing) strategy. This move signifies Honda's inaugural vehicle procurement from a competing automaker in roughly 30 years. Amidst intense market rivalry, Honda is set to deepen its collaborative ties with partners Nissan and Mitsubishi to bolster its competitive edge.
The cooperation discussions, initiated by the trio of companies in August 2024, have advanced significantly. Mitsubishi Motors is poised to rebrand the pickup truck model 'L200 Triton,' manufactured in Thailand, under the Honda banner. The rebadged vehicle is slated for launch in markets such as Southeast Asia starting from 2028 and beyond.
