Recently, a Chinese driver found himself in a perilous situation while utilizing Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system overseas. Based on the video footage he shared, he was driving normally with FSD activated when the traffic ahead began to decelerate. Suddenly, a blue plastic bag drifted across from the opposite lane and landed in front of his vehicle, triggering the FSD system to immediately initiate emergency braking. At that precise moment, a truck trailing behind failed to brake in time, leading to a rear-end collision.

The vehicle owner holds the view that the FSD system bears 80% of the responsibility, while the truck driver is accountable for the remaining 20%. Tesla's FSD employs a pure vision approach, relying solely on cameras and neural networks to detect and identify objects. A plastic bag fluttering on the road surface poses a 'long-tail challenge'—a scenario that is difficult to consistently identify and handle. Consequently, the AI system prioritizes braking to ensure safety.
