Honda has forged a partnership with Tata Technologies to outsource the development of new vehicles specifically tailored for the Indian market. The primary goal is to slash development costs by as much as 20% and condense the development timeline from roughly five years down to two and a half years. This initiative represents Honda's inaugural foray into fully outsourcing the development of an entire vehicle platform. Earlier this year, in May, Tata Technologies disclosed that its undisclosed Japanese automotive partner for whole vehicle development was, in fact, Honda.
In the past, discrepancies in supplier selection between the two entities had reportedly hindered development progress. However, Honda refuted these assertions, underscoring the seamless and close-knit collaboration between their respective teams. As per the new agreement, Tata Technologies will shoulder the responsibility of developing complete vehicles for the Indian market. Meanwhile, Honda will maintain its grip on pivotal areas such as technology, connectivity, and driving assistance, in addition to supervising the overall development quality.
Drawing on Tata Technologies' local expertise and resources, the duo will initially focus on crafting a compact SUV designed to cater to India's mainstream market segment. This vehicle is slated for a 2028 launch, with plans to subsequently introduce a mid-size SUV. At present, Honda's foothold in the Indian market has dwindled to a mere 1.3%. This decline can be attributed to its prior strategy of introducing overseas models with minimal adaptations, which resulted in inflated product pricing and diminished competitiveness.
India stands as Honda's sole significant emerging market, and should the inaugural collaborative product prove successful, Honda may consider exporting models from India to other global markets in the future.
