Recently, a viewpoint has been circulating that "in-house research and development (R&D) is synonymous with 'eliminating XX' and stands in direct opposition to suppliers." In response to this, Li Xiang, the CEO of Li Auto, took to social media to offer a counterpoint. He emphasized that the reality is quite the contrary, drawing parallels with well-known industry examples. He pointed to Apple's proprietary A-series chips, NVIDIA and Qualcomm's approach of "in-house R&D + TSMC foundry services" for their flagship chips, and Tesla's strategy of developing its own batteries while simultaneously collaborating with industry giants like CATL, LG, and Sunwoda for manufacturing. Li Xiang elucidated that such a model has not only been beneficial but has actually propelled suppliers like TSMC and CATL to greater heights of success and innovation.
