According to the National Standards Information Public Service Platform, China has officially unveiled its first mandatory national standard for autonomous driving systems in L3 and L4 intelligent connected vehicles. Titled "Safety Requirements for Autonomous Driving Systems in Intelligent Connected Vehicles" (GB 44721-2026), the standard will come into effect on July 1, 2027. This standard is specifically designed for M-class (passenger) and N-class (cargo) vehicles equipped with L3 conditional autonomous driving and L4 high-level autonomous driving systems, excluding automatic parking systems. It sets up a safety requirements framework across four key dimensions: corporate safety assurance mechanisms, the system's capability to execute dynamic driving tasks, human-machine interaction and user notification, as well as multi-dimensional inspection and testing methods. It mandates that vehicle manufacturers must establish assurance capabilities throughout the entire lifecycle, from product design and development to production, manufacturing, and post-deployment phases. Additionally, it lays out specific requirements for the safety level of autonomous driving systems, the triggering and execution of minimum risk strategies, and user notification. All models currently available in the market with high-level autonomous driving functions must adhere to this standard; failure to comply will result in a ban on their sales.
