According to a report by Electrek, a Tesla vehicle outfitted with the latest FSD v14.3.7 system encountered a perilous situation at a railway crossing this week. The vehicle failed to halt in time, narrowly escaping a collision with an oncoming train. The entire incident was captured by the vehicle's dashcam. In a video shared on social media by the vehicle's owner, Lei Xing, the Tesla is seen approaching the crossing at a speed of around 15 km/h. Despite the presence of flashing warning lights and the sound of a train whistle, the FSD system only momentarily decelerated before attempting to proceed across the tracks. Fortunately, the driver intervened by manually applying the brakes, thus averting a potential disaster. FSD v14.3.7, the latest iteration released by Tesla for vehicles equipped with AI4 hardware, is touted to enhance the recognition of rare and anomalous objects. However, in this particular instance, the system failed to detect the railway barrier and the approaching train. Public reports indicate that there have been over 40 instances of Tesla vehicles malfunctioning at railway crossings. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an inquiry into the FSD system, focusing on behaviors such as running red lights and encroaching into oncoming traffic lanes. This investigation encompasses approximately 2.9 million Tesla vehicles. Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal have also penned a letter to the NHTSA, urging a targeted investigation into the FSD system's failures at railway crossings.
