On August 24, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) declared that it would elevate its investigation into General Motors' (GM) eBoost brake-by-wire system to an engineering analysis phase (EA26006), broadening the scope to encompass 1,164,820 vehicles. An engineering analysis is the most rigorous level of investigation undertaken by the NHTSA before a recall is initiated. Should the system be found to present an unreasonable safety hazard, a widespread recall is virtually certain. This probe arises from numerous complaints regarding sudden brake assist failures, with a cumulative tally of 745 failure reports and 22 collision or fire incidents associated, five of which led to injuries. The investigation encompasses a range of GM models from the 2023 to 2026 model years, along with models produced by GM for Honda. The eBoost brake-by-wire system, implemented in vehicles since 2019, eliminates the mechanical hard link between the pedal and the braking mechanism, relying solely on electronic signal transmission. In instances of assist failure, braking may prove ineffective. Going forward, the NHTSA will concentrate on assessing the structural issue of spindle fracture and the efficacy of GM's current remedial actions.
