Mexico's well - established automaker, DINA, has forged a partnership with local collaborators to roll out its inaugural domestically - manufactured electric bus, the Taruk. This ambitious move comes with a substantial investment of US$60 million, with the primary objective of making significant inroads into the local market. At present, the Taruk model has already commenced operations in Chetumal and is slated to make its way into Mexico City by 2027.

The production facility is projected to have an annual output capacity ranging from 5,000 to 6,000 units. When it comes to component localization, over 70% of the parts are currently sourced locally, with plans to elevate this ratio to between 75% and 80% in the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, a major stumbling block remains: the core power battery cells are still heavily dependent on Chinese suppliers.

Presently, Mexico is only capable of carrying out local assembly for components like the bus body and chassis. Achieving breakthroughs in fields that are technology - intensive in new energy will require a considerable amount of time. In stark contrast, China has successfully built a comprehensive industrial chain for power batteries and holds a dominant position in the global supply landscape.
