On August 11, Samsung SDI and General Motors (GM) entered into a collaborative pact aimed at co-developing next-generation prismatic batteries tailored for electric vehicles (EVs). These advanced batteries are slated for integration into GM's forthcoming vehicle models. Concurrently, Samsung SDI has inked a deal to purchase the entirety of GM's 49.99% stake in their joint venture, Synergy Cells, thereby assuming full control of the entity. The Synergy Cells facility, currently under construction, is engineered to boast an impressive annual production capacity of 27GWh, backed by a planned investment of $3.5 billion. This strategic acquisition marks Samsung SDI's foray into establishing its inaugural independently operated battery plant in North America, paving the way for the large-scale manufacture of state-of-the-art battery solutions.
