Reports indicate that General Motors (GM) is set to sell half of its shares in a $3.5 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery plant—a joint venture with Samsung SDI situated in Indiana, USA—to Samsung SDI itself. Initially, the plant was designed to cater to the escalating demand for electric vehicles and to offer energy storage solutions. In August 2024, both parties inked an agreement to construct the plant, which was initially slated to commence production in 2027 with a starting capacity of 30GWh, and had plans to scale up to 36GWh subsequently. However, in May of this year, a spokesperson from General Motors announced that the plant's construction would be put on hold to align the capacity with market demand. Presently, it is still uncertain how Samsung SDI intends to manage the plant's future operations.
