Tesla's AI director, Ashok Elluswamy, has once again clarified the speed-setting approach for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, an approach that has left many vehicle owners perplexed. Initially, FSD permitted owners to customize their maximum driving speeds. However, following the launch of FSD v14 last year, this capability was eliminated. In its place, five distinct 'speed modes' were introduced, which not only dictate driving speed but also influence the frequency of various driving behaviors. The performance of these modes is subject to change with software updates, becoming a hotbed of controversy.

Numerous owners argue that driving modes should solely dictate the style of driving behavior, with speed control remaining the driver's prerogative. Furthermore, any traffic violation tickets incurred while using FSD are the sole responsibility of the owners. Elluswamy stated that Tesla currently has no intention of reinstating the maximum speed control feature, deeming it an 'anti-pattern.' He underscored Tesla's commitment to aligning FSD more closely with the driver's individual preferences.

Nevertheless, owners remain dissatisfied, as they frequently find themselves needing to intervene due to the vehicle's speed not meeting their expectations. Presently, Tesla is moving towards a strategy of training its AI to better tailor the vehicle's driving style to the occupants' preferences.
