Recently, Tesla officially commenced the rollout of the FSD V14 Lite (Full Self-Driving V14 Lite) software update for vehicles fitted with Hardware 3 (HW3) systems, reaching around 4 million older models throughout North America. This iteration leverages model distillation techniques to condense and tailor the comprehensive FSD V14 algorithm, originally designed for the HW4 platform, to be compatible with the HW3 hardware. This ensures seamless functionality with just 144 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) of computational power. The update brings forth new capabilities, including automated parking, maneuvering out of parking spaces, and reverse driving. It also refines navigation decision-making strategies, enhances following and lane-changing behaviors, and accommodates user-defined driving preferences. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's Vice President of AI, underscored that despite these advancements, the update still constitutes a Level 2 assisted driving system, necessitating ongoing driver oversight. Presently, the deployment is in its nascent phase and will progressively extend to additional global markets, with the exact timeline contingent upon the progress of technical validation, regional customization, and regulatory clearances.
