Tesla has officially initiated engineering tests for the inaugural batch of production-ready Cybercabs on the public roads of Austin, Texas. This innovative vehicle comes devoid of a steering wheel and foot pedals, with a safety supervisor stationed inside for oversight. The Cybercab concept car first graced the stage on October 10, 2024, and by June 30, 2026, the production-ready model took to the streets for engineering tests, marking a swift transition of approximately 20 months from concept unveiling to real-world testing. This phase of testing focuses on hardware evaluation for the exclusive production model, leveraging Austin's well-established autonomous driving system. The Cybercab, featuring a sleek two-seat design, has been developed with the sole purpose of fully autonomous driving. All traditional driving control components have been deliberately omitted from the outset of the production model's design, emphasizing its cutting-edge approach. Currently in the engineering testing phase and not yet accessible to the general public, the primary objective is to validate the reliability of the production vehicle's hardware. Tesla has deployed a fleet of 34 vehicles for testing in downtown Austin. Each vehicle is equipped with a safety supervisor as a standard precaution, whose role is to observe and respond to any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during the tests.
