In December 2020, Hyundai Motor acquired an 80% controlling stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank for $880 million, valuing the company at $1.1 billion at the time. The acquisition agreement included a put option that allowed SoftBank to sell its remaining shares in the future. Now, SoftBank has exercised this option, selling its remaining shares to Hyundai Motor for $325 million. With a history spanning over three decades, Boston Dynamics has seen slow progress in commercializing its robots. The quadrupedal robot Spot represents its first commercial success, while the humanoid robot Atlas still faces challenges in proving its commercial value.
