On March 29, 2026, Beijing emerged as the frontrunner in China by initiating the development and application of commercial insurance products tailored specifically for intelligent connected new energy vehicles. These innovative insurance offerings maintain the core framework of the existing new energy commercial vehicle insurance system, adhering to the guiding principle of "overall stability with targeted enhancements." They are designed to provide comprehensive coverage for specific scenarios in intelligent driving, as well as losses stemming from hardware and software malfunctions, catering to the needs of intelligent connected new energy vehicles across all autonomy levels, from L2 to L4.
Traditional vehicle insurance policies fall short in adequately addressing scenarios involving "human-machine co-driving" and "fully machine-driven" operations, as well as losses incurred from upgrades to advanced driving assistance systems. The newly introduced products effectively bridge this coverage gap. Initially, these products will primarily cater to newly purchased vehicles, offering vehicle owners the flexibility to choose between these exclusive offerings and existing insurance policies. For vehicles equipped with Level 3 or Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, the exclusive insurance products will be mandatory for those undergoing testing or having secured official road approval in Beijing, in strict compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Looking ahead, the scope of these new insurance products will be progressively expanded. Meanwhile, pricing will remain generally stable, with moderate adjustments made in response to changes in coverage responsibilities, ensuring a balanced and sustainable approach to insurance provision.
