BYD is revolutionizing the global electric vehicle (EV) market. Over the past five years, BYD has outsold Tesla in over 20 countries and regions, establishing itself as a formidable contender in the international arena. By 2025, BYD’s annual sales in the UK market surpassed Tesla for the first time, securing its position as the world’s top-selling EV brand. In 2021, BYD launched the Atto 3 as its inaugural passenger car for export, underscoring its commitment to technological innovation and high-performance standards. Between 2021 and 2025, BYD expanded its global presence to 113 countries and regions, capitalizing on its vertically integrated supply chain to manage costs effectively and gain a competitive edge in markets such as Uruguay, South America, and beyond.

However, BYD’s expansion in North America and Europe encountered hurdles. U.S. geopolitical pressures forced the cancellation of its planned factory construction in Mexico, while the European Union introduced regulatory barriers aimed at limiting the influence of Chinese automakers. In response, BYD pivoted toward localized overseas production strategies, a move mirrored by other Chinese automakers seeking to bolster their global manufacturing capabilities. By 2023, China had emerged as the world’s largest automotive exporter, rapidly closing the gap with Japanese automakers and reshaping the dynamics of global auto trade.
