Recently, the mandatory national standard GB 48001-2026, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has received official approval and is set to take effect on January 1, 2027. The new regulation clearly stipulates that each vehicle door must be fitted with an independent mechanical release mechanism, which should be prominently placed and designed for intuitive use. This signifies that fully concealed, purely electronic door handles will be gradually phased out from the market. The primary objective of this new regulation is to mitigate the safety risks associated with hidden door handles that may fail to operate in extreme situations, such as power outages or collisions. Tests carried out by the China Insurance Automotive Technology Institute (CIATI) have shown that purely electronic hidden door handles have a mere 67% success rate in opening after side collisions, a figure that is significantly lower than the 98% success rate of traditional mechanical door handles. Additionally, the new regulation incorporates a transitional period, during which new vehicle models applying for type approval are required to adhere to the standards in stages. Meanwhile, models that have already obtained type approval must fully comply with the new standards by January 1, 2029, at the latest.
