On January 28th, Bloomberg reported that BYD is contemplating an expansion of its Indian business, with a plan to address the soaring local demand for electric vehicles (EVs) by considering local assembly. Owing to India's import quota constraints, BYD is currently evaluating options for local assembly, while also striving to obtain local safety and regulatory certifications for a broader range of models. Presently, Indian dealers are grappling with a backlog of several hundred orders. Notably, BYD's sales in India witnessed a remarkable surge of approximately 88% last year, reaching a total of around 5,500 units. Despite the imposition of a 110% import tariff on fully assembled vehicles, BYD's pricing remains competitive, being lower than that of Tesla, and its sales continue to exhibit growth. Looking ahead, BYD has set ambitious goals to boost deliveries to markets beyond China by nearly 25% in the current year.
