On Wednesday, the American insurance company Lemonade declared its intention to provide a substantial 50% premium reduction to Tesla vehicle owners who opt to activate the 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) capability. This decision is based on data indicating that the FSD feature contributes to a decrease in accident rates. Within the framework of this partnership, Tesla will supply vehicle telemetry data, enabling the differentiation between miles traveled under the supervision of the FSD system and those driven manually. This premium discount is specifically applicable to pay-per-mile insurance offerings. Shai Wininger, co-founder of Lemonade, emphasized that the data supports the notion that employing FSD can roughly double the safety quotient of driving. He also clarified that this partnership does not involve any monetary transactions. It's worth noting that Tesla already operates its own insurance program, which grants monthly discounts of up to 10% to owners who utilize FSD for more than half of their driving distance.

Lemonade's innovative 'Autonomous Vehicle Insurance' product is set to debut in Arizona on January 26, followed by Oregon in February. As the FSD software undergoes updates, further reductions in premiums are anticipated. Nevertheless, Wininger acknowledged that the Tesla FSD system has its constraints and is not yet completely autonomous. He believes that the 50% discount is a fair and reasonable offer under these circumstances.
