On the 19th, the German government made an announcement stating that, in a bid to spur the growth of its domestic electric vehicle sector, it would offer subsidies of up to €6,000 to families buying new electric vehicles. This move signifies the reintroduction of comparable subsidies in Germany, following the discontinuation of the initial vehicle purchase subsidy program at the close of 2023.

The subsidies are specifically aimed at private consumers and will be applicable to newly registered battery electric vehicles, certain plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and extended-range electric vehicles, starting from January 1, 2026. The subsidy amounts will vary, ranging from €1,500 to €6,000, depending on factors such as the type of vehicle, the size of the household, and the income level of the applicants.

The overall scale of this subsidy initiative is set at €3 billion over a three-year period. It is anticipated to provide support for up to around 800,000 electric vehicles, potentially offering advantages to companies like BYD and Volkswagen.
