On December 16, at the launch ceremony for the Great Wall Ora 5, Chairman Wei Jianjun highlighted the significant costs and subpar maintainability associated with integrated die-casting car bodies in China, igniting a flurry of debate. Ji Chaochao, Li Auto’s Head of Material Technology, contends that an excess of high-strength materials isn't always beneficial. Once a certain threshold is crossed, the car body becomes overly rigid, hindering its ability to deform and absorb impact forces effectively. This, in turn, can transfer these forces directly to the occupants, potentially compromising safety. He also pointed out that alloys not requiring heat treatment can minimize part distortion, boost the car body's strength and resilience, and cut down on expenses. Nevertheless, the integrated die-casting technology continues to grapple with issues like steep maintenance costs and technical hurdles.
