In 2025, the United States slashed subsidies for the electric vehicle (EV) sector, sending shockwaves through the industry and impeding the development of charging infrastructure. The Trump administration put on hold two subsidy programs aimed at bolstering EV charging infrastructure, notably the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) initiative. Initially, this program earmarked $5 billion over a five-year span to deploy charging stations nationwide. This Tuesday, 16 U.S. states along with the District of Columbia initiated legal action against the federal government. They argue that the funding freeze will significantly hamper the establishment of charging infrastructure, thereby hindering EV adoption, climate change mitigation efforts, and support for the green economy. A federal district judge in Seattle has granted a temporary restraining order, temporarily barring the federal government from withholding specific grants earmarked for charging station construction in 14 states.
