Recently, General Motors made an announcement stating that it will incorporate the Apple Wallet digital car key feature into its vehicle lineup. With this functionality, users can effortlessly unlock, lock, and start their cars without any physical interaction, simply by using an iPhone or Apple Watch. This feature is set to extend across General Motors' four prominent brands in the U.S. and Canadian markets: Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick.
Although the precise launch date and the specific vehicle models that will be compatible have not been disclosed yet, this step is in harmony with Apple's partnership initiative that was unveiled in June of this year. Utilizing ultra-wideband technology, this feature ensures "hassle-free access." Even after the iPhone is powered off, its "Power Reserve" capability still permits the car key to function for an extra 5 hours. Moreover, car key privileges can be easily shared with family and friends.
At present, numerous brands have already embraced this feature, and some manufacturers are also considering joining the bandwagon. However, it's worth noting that General Motors had previously opted to gradually discontinue the CarPlay in-car connectivity system. Starting from 2025, the upcoming generation of electric vehicle models will no longer have it pre-installed.
