Recently, as reported by Electrek, the 2026 annual report issued by Germany's mandatory vehicle safety inspection body, the TÜV Association, reveals that the Tesla Model Y has been ranked as the least reliable car among models aged between 2 and 3 years. It boasts the highest defect rate among all vehicles tested over the past ten years. Drawing on inspection data from roughly 9.5 million vehicles spanning from July 2024 to June 2025, the report highlights that 17.3% of Model Ys did not pass inspections owing to 'serious' or 'dangerous' defects. In contrast, the average failure rate for vehicles in the same age bracket stands at approximately 6.5%. The principal problems with the Tesla Model Y center around its suspension system, braking system, and lighting system. By comparison, other electric vehicles, such as the BMW Mini Cooper SE and Audi Q4 e-tron, exhibit lower defect rates, suggesting that the issues are not ubiquitous across all electric vehicles but are instead specific to Tesla.
