During a podcast interview on Wednesday, Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford Motor Company, disclosed that Ford is currently grappling with 5,000 unfilled technician positions. Despite dangling an enticing annual salary of up to $120,000 — approximately double the median wage for American workers — the company is still facing an uphill battle in finding qualified candidates. Farley emphasized that this problem extends far beyond Ford's own workforce challenges: "Our nation is confronting a critical issue that hasn't received enough attention. At present, there are over 1 million vital positions lying vacant across the country, spanning a wide array of sectors, including emergency services, trucking, factory operations, plumbing, electrical work, and various artisan trades. The severity of this situation cannot be overstated."
