According to Business Insider, James Philbin, who leads Rivian's autonomous driving division, has openly taken aim at Tesla's "inflexible stance" on LiDAR technology. Philbin emphasized that Tesla's position runs counter to the genuine engineering requirements of autonomous vehicles and ignores the ongoing trend of falling sensor prices, particularly for LiDAR. He argued that Tesla's resistance to incorporating diverse sensor technologies cannot be justified purely on engineering grounds.
Previously, Musk has consistently shown disdain for LiDAR, going so far as to predict that the automotive industry will eventually abandon it altogether. He has labeled LiDAR as both costly and superfluous, stressing that its relevance will diminish once significant advancements are made in visual recognition technology.
