The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) has voiced concerns that the trade measures implemented by the EU to safeguard its steel industry could potentially lead to inflationary pressures and disrupt the supply chains of European automakers. Currently, automakers procure 90% of their steel from within the EU. However, they still rely on imports for certain specialized types of steel that cannot be produced domestically. The EU's plan to reduce the tariff-free steel import quota, coupled with the imposition of a 50% tariff on imports exceeding this quota, is set to make it increasingly challenging and costly for automakers to source steel from outside Europe. The director of ACEA emphasized the need to strike a more equitable balance between the interests of European steel producers and the requirements of steel users.
