Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) is set to introduce a new Series 8 high-nickel battery next year, aiming to deploy it in the extended-range variants of top-tier new energy vehicle brands. This battery falls under the ternary lithium battery category, a system that has previously been linked to multiple thermal runaway incidents due to its nascent technology stage. Presently, there are over four planned high-capacity plug-in hybrid and extended-range vehicle models boasting approximately 80 kWh of battery capacity. Among these are the Leapmotor D-series and Xiaomi's extended-range offerings. Nonetheless, not all these models will incorporate CATL's Series 8 high-nickel batteries. This year, the battery capacities of certain extended-range models have already surpassed the 60 kWh mark. Take, for instance, the new generation IM LS6 extended-range version, which comes equipped with a 66-kWh battery, delivering a pure electric range of up to 450 kilometers under CLTC conditions.
