Xiaomi Auto is currently undergoing a significant trial, as it has announced a recall of 116,887 SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2024, and August 30, 2025, effective immediately. The recall stems from potential shortcomings in the L2 highway pilot-assist driving function's ability to accurately recognize, warn, or effectively handle certain extreme and specific driving scenarios, thereby posing potential safety hazards.

This recall process will be executed through OTA (Over-the-Air) technology, which enables the remote installation of software updates without the need for vehicles to be physically returned to the factory. The recall coding indicates that it may have been triggered by regulatory investigations, potentially connected to an explosion and fire incident involving a Xiaomi SU7 on March 29, 2025. Prior to this, Xiaomi Auto had already initiated recalls for some vehicles due to similar issues.

This latest recall, combined with the ongoing solicitation of public opinions on the new national standard for intelligent vehicles, underscores the safety deficiencies inherent in the L2 highway pilot-assist driving function. It also reflects the existing gap between the aggressive promotion of assisted driving features and the actual technological capabilities within the intelligent vehicle industry.

At present, the technological leap required to advance from Level 2 to Level 3 autonomous driving presents a formidable challenge. Automakers are advised to exercise caution and avoid overhyping the capabilities of their assisted driving systems. While OTA technology can indeed rectify safety defects and upgrade onboard systems, it is crucial to recognize that vehicle delivery marks only the beginning of a comprehensive service journey.

The implementation of the new national standard is expected to shift the competitive landscape in the intelligent vehicle sector, redirecting the focus from marketing hype to genuine technological prowess. Xiaomi Auto's recall serves as a wake-up call for the entire industry, emphasizing that safety should remain an absolute and non-negotiable priority (the term 'bottom line' aptly captures this sentiment in the given context). The era of rigorous regulation for intelligent vehicles has undeniably arrived.
