On September 16, the People's Court of Daxing District in Beijing issued a verdict in a sales contract dispute case filed by Ms. Zhang against Tesla Motors Sales Service (Beijing) Co., Ltd., and other related parties. The court determined that Tesla, as the service provider, must uphold consumers' right to information and mandated the company to furnish Ms. Zhang with the complete driving data from the 30-minute period preceding the accident within 10 days. The background to this case is that Ms. Zhang's father was involved in an accident while driving a Tesla, and despite her repeated requests, Tesla had consistently refused to provide the full driving data. In April 2021, Ms. Zhang took her fight for justice to the Shanghai Auto Show, where she was subsequently detained by the authorities. Tesla also filed a lawsuit against her, alleging infringement of its reputation rights, which ultimately resulted in her being ordered to pay 170,000 yuan in compensation. This time around, Ms. Zhang shifted her legal strategy from focusing on product quality to centering on data access, and emerged victorious. She announced her intention to seek a forensic appraisal once she obtains the data.
