According to reports from foreign media, Oliver Zipse, the Chief Executive Officer of BMW, recently voiced his opinion that the European Union's (EU) plan to completely phase out fuel-powered vehicles by 2035 represents a "significant misstep." He has proposed substituting the existing policy with an emissions accounting framework that encompasses the entire automotive supply chain. Zipse highlighted that establishing a rigid deadline for the transition could potentially overlook the true carbon footprint at every stage of the automotive value chain, encompassing battery production and energy sourcing.
He called upon the EU to permit the continued utilization of eco-friendly fuels beyond 2035 and stressed that fuel producers ought to share the burden of emissions reduction. Furthermore, Zipse mentioned that, despite facing hurdles such as escalating U.S. tariffs, sluggish market demand, and intense competition from Chinese automotive manufacturers, BMW still anticipates selling over 2.5 million vehicles in 2025.
