On August 28, Markus Schäfer, the Chief Technology Officer of the Mercedes-Benz Group, urged the United States and the European Union to swiftly implement a trade agreement aimed at reducing automotive tariffs, emphasizing that lingering tariffs are increasingly constricting the automotive industry's operating margins. In an interview, Schäfer remarked, "The tariff issue has had a profound impact, and it is imperative that both parties resolve it within the coming weeks." Despite a recent broad trade agreement between the US and EU, American tariffs on automotive imports remain in force. European automakers still face a 27.5% tariff on vehicles sold to the US, which would decrease to 15% if the EU were to reciprocate by lowering tariffs on American industrial products. According to foreign media reports, the EU is contemplating the elimination of these tariffs through an expedited legislative process.
