They cautioned that stringent climate regulations could potentially undermine the region's automotive sector and its extensive supply chain. In a formal letter, the leading automotive industry lobbying group urged European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to reassess the strategy of phasing out fossil fuel vehicles by the mid-2030s. The letter underscored the necessity for the European automotive industry's transformation to transcend idealism and confront current industrial and geopolitical realities. Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group, and Zink, an executive from Schaeffler Group, jointly emphasized that, given the prevailing global circumstances, achieving the carbon dioxide emission reduction targets set for 2030 and 2035 has become impracticable.
