Recently, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been at the center of a surge in hacking endeavors, with generative AI playing a pivotal role in expediting the creation of PC-based PS5 game emulators. Hacker Jody leveraged AI technology to unearth a critical security flaw that enables the PS5 to boot the Linux operating system. Through Sony's security reporting program, Jody was rewarded with a substantial $50,000 bounty. Jody explained that his decision to claim the reward was driven by his mother's severe illness and the pressing financial need it created. He also expressed the belief that, even if he hadn't reported the vulnerability, others would have inevitably discovered it using AI tools.

Previously, another security engineer had also stumbled upon this vulnerability and delved into methods for deploying Linux on PS5 consoles operating on firmware versions ranging from 13.60 to 14.0. Many gaming enthusiasts had eagerly anticipated exploiting this flaw to enable dual-booting capabilities on their PS5s, allowing them to switch between Linux and eagerly awaited titles like GTA 6. However, with Sony promptly addressing and patching the vulnerability, such plans have been rendered unfeasible.
