Recently, the health monitoring function of Xiao Tian Cai smartwatches has ignited a flurry of debates among netizens, primarily due to its weight evaluation outcomes. Several users posted screenshots on social media, revealing that a teenage girl, who stands at 167cm and weighs 50.5kg, was branded as 'overweight' by the smartwatch. Moreover, it noted that her weight 'surpasses that of 99% of her peers.' This evaluation has triggered widespread doubt, with the majority of netizens contending that the description lacks scientific basis and could potentially misguide children and adolescents, thereby exacerbating concerns related to body weight.
On August 26, the PR department of Xiao Tian Cai responded to the controversy, admitting that the language used in the assessment was imprecise. They stated that immediate rectifications were made overnight. All evaluative and judgmental content has been excised, leaving behind only three objective data points: height, weight, and BMI. Xiao Tian Cai clarified that the initial purpose of the feature was to furnish parents with reference information regarding their children's growth. Nevertheless, they conceded that the implementation was not rigorous enough and announced that, for the time being, they would only display objective data. Future updates to the feature would be determined by the product department.
According to the criteria established by the National Health Commission, the girl's BMI is roughly 18.1, which does not place her in the overweight category for adolescents. Experts emphasize that evaluating overweight and obesity in children and adolescents necessitates taking into account various factors, such as age, gender, and body composition, rather than merely relying on height and weight.
