Running an app store is not only immensely lucrative but also a crucial area that major platforms strive to safeguard. However, the six-year-long legal battle between Google and Epic Games has culminated in an unexpected outcome: On July 31, 2025 (local time in the United States), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit dismissed Google's appeal, thereby affirming the initial verdict that Google's app store had engaged in unlawful monopolistic behavior. As a result, Google is now required to undertake technical preparations to incorporate other payment methods by March 2026. Additionally, it must permit app developers to establish competitive markets and utilize alternative billing systems, thereby making third-party app stores more readily available than ever before.
