On July 3, Indian Minister of Information Technology, Krishnan, made a statement on Thursday, revealing that the Indian government has launched an investigation into a data breach incident at Tata Electronics. This breach led to the unauthorized disclosure of documents pertaining to Apple’s yet-to-be-released iPhone 18 Pro. This statement represents the Indian government’s first public comment on the issue. According to reports, a ransomware group infiltrated Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier based in India, and stole confidential data. Subsequently, the group posted files containing sensitive lists of components and suppliers, along with photos of the iPhone 18 Pro model, on the dark web.
Krishnan mentioned that the incident has been duly reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), which serves as the primary agency tasked with addressing computer security issues in the country. The repercussions of this data breach extend beyond Apple, impacting other major companies such as Tesla and Qualcomm as well. In response to the breach, Tata Group has engaged global advisors to carry out a thorough forensic audit.
