The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched a public consultation on June 30, 2026, proposing to allow app developers to direct users to payment channels outside of Apple's and Google's app stores in order to reduce fees and promote market competition. Currently, Apple completely prohibits such redirection, while Google also imposes restrictions. The proposed measures would remove these restrictions, enabling developers to communicate directly with users about external payment methods. The CMA also suggested that related fees should be fair and reasonable, and lower than the current app store commissions. Additionally, the CMA is seeking opinions on the technical implementation and fee structure for opening up Apple's iOS Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality, aiming to promote competition and innovation in services such as mobile payments.
