On June 30, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) unveiled the initiation of a public consultation concerning new regulatory actions aimed at Apple and Google's mobile platforms. As per the draft regulations, these two tech giants are barred from preventing UK app developers from guiding users to external platforms, beyond the confines of app stores, for processing payments, subscriptions, or other transactions. This move is designed to stimulate market competition and diminish developers' dependence on official app stores. The CMA further suggests that fees associated with traffic redirection should comply with the principles of being 'fair and reasonable,' with anticipated costs falling below the current app store commission rates. Concurrently, the CMA is soliciting feedback on the technical specifics and fee structures for unlocking Apple's iOS Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities, with the goal of fostering competition and innovation in sectors like mobile payments.
