Apple is actively pursuing supply chain diversification to lessen its dependence on China, and India has emerged as a pivotal hub for its iPhone manufacturing, with roughly a quarter of all iPhones globally now being produced in India. The Tata Group stands as a key ally for Apple in scaling up production in India, tasked with manufacturing iPhone components like back shells. Nonetheless, the Tata Group’s factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, India, received a warning from local pollution control authorities for discharging wastewater that has led to the contamination of farmland groundwater. Should the necessary corrections not be implemented within a given timeframe, the factory risks being compelled to halt production. This incident once again underscores the deficiencies in quality control and management within India’s contract manufacturing industry chain. Despite this, Apple persists in deepening its collaboration with Indian suppliers and broadening its production scope. However, in the short run, it will still be challenging to significantly reduce reliance on China’s supply chain.
