On June 14, 2026, news emerged that India's environmental protection agency had lodged accusations against a Tata Group-owned factory, which manufactures components for Apple's iPhones. The factory is alleged to have discharged wastewater, thereby contaminating the groundwater that irrigates the surrounding farmland. Should Tata fail to provide a satisfactory explanation, the factory could face a production halt. The facility, situated in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, specializes in producing iPhone components, notably backplates. Between December 2025 and May 2026, regulatory bodies confirmed the pollution through five separate inspections, noting Tata's failure to take corrective action. Tata Electronics has refuted these claims, citing third-party tests that affirm compliance with environmental standards. As of now, both Apple and the local government have yet to issue a statement.
