India’s environmental regulatory body has formally accused Tata Group’s manufacturing facility in Hosur of discharging untreated wastewater, resulting in contamination of groundwater resources used by nearby agricultural lands. The plant, a key supplier of iPhone components and Apple’s second-largest manufacturing partner in South Asia, has been flagged for persistent non-compliance following multiple inspections. Regulatory authorities have stated that if Tata Group fails to provide a satisfactory explanation or remediation plan, production at the facility may be temporarily halted.
Tata Group, however, has contested the allegations, asserting that independent third-party testing confirms its emissions adhere to environmental standards. This incident adds to a series of setbacks for Apple’s India-based supply chain, which has previously grappled with challenges such as factory fires and operational disruptions.
Environmental violations remain a widespread issue among Indian industrial enterprises. Data indicates that 4.4% of factories nationwide have failed to meet regulatory standards over the past five years, leading to the closure of approximately 3,600 facilities. Meanwhile, India’s role in Apple’s global manufacturing strategy continues to grow, with projections estimating that by 2026, 26% of all iPhone production will originate from the country.
