Amazon's smart doorbell brand, Ring, has recently become embroiled in yet another privacy-related lawsuit in the United States. Charles Sigwalt, a resident of Virginia, initiated a class-action lawsuit in the federal court of Seattle, accusing Ring's 'Familiar Faces' feature of unlawfully gathering and storing facial biometric data from passersby without obtaining their consent. This feature, which leverages AI-powered facial recognition technology, is designed to assist users in identifying frequent visitors. However, the plaintiff emphasized that passersby merely walking past the doorbell had never granted permission for their facial information to be collected, thereby making this controversy the crux of the lawsuit. The complaint contends that Ring doorbells have collected facial data from millions of Americans without their awareness. Amazon has not issued a response regarding this matter thus far.
