An Amazon spokesperson announced that starting from May 20, 2026, Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store. However, users will still be able to read books they have already downloaded and log in to their accounts through other means to view past purchases. If older devices are unregistered or factory reset after this date, they will not be able to be re-registered. The affected devices date back as early as the original Kindle from 2007. Amazon will notify affected users via email before May 20 and notes that only book services are restricted on Kindle Fire devices released before 2012, with other apps and services unaffected. In 2016, Amazon required software updates for these devices, and now it seems their lifespan has come to an end.
