Nothing co-founder and CEO Carl Pei stated at the SXSW conference that smartphones will no longer be app-centric in the future but will shift toward a new interaction model driven by AI agents, leading to a restructuring of the software ecosystem. He pointed out that the current App-centric product format has nearly reached its limits and will be disrupted by the AI wave. Pei introduced the evolutionary path of 'AI-first devices,' which is divided into two stages: the first stage involves 'task-executing AI,' which only achieves basic functions; in the second stage, AI will possess the ability to learn user intentions over the long term, enabling an 'intention-driven' interaction method. In the future, operating systems will transition to interfaces optimized for AI agents. However, this transformation will not be completed in the short term, as the current app ecosystem still holds value. In the long run, apps will become resource modules invoked by AI.
