In the most recent installment of Bloomberg's 'Power On' column, it was disclosed that Apple is in the process of developing a colossal foldable iPad, comparable in size to a Mac display. However, this ambitious project has encountered numerous setbacks and may even face cancellation. Earlier speculations hinted at an initial release date of 2028, which was subsequently pushed back to 2029. Nevertheless, the latest intelligence suggests that this device might never make it to mass production or hit the market shelves.
The development of this device has been plagued by design and engineering hurdles. Notably, there have been interaction issues with large-sized foldable devices, which have contributed to the project's delays and left some problems potentially unresolved. If the user experience falls short of Apple's high standards, the company may choose to abandon the project altogether.
Current leaks have yet to provide specific size details, merely describing the device as a foldable iPad with 'huge, Mac-level dimensions.' Earlier rumors, however, pointed to a diagonal screen size of up to 18 inches. Despite its massive size, the device will remain positioned as an iPad, running on iPadOS rather than macOS. It will not morph into a hybrid of iPad and Mac, nor will it serve as a traditional laptop replacement.
In addition to this behemoth, Apple is also exploring the possibility of a smaller foldable iPad, potentially featuring a 7-inch or 8-inch screen. This variant could potentially replace the existing iPad mini, offering a more compact and portable option for users.
