Recently, Nokia initiated legal proceedings against Acer and ASUS in Germany, alleging infringement of its H.265 (HEVC) video encoding standard patents. The Munich Regional Court in Germany delivered a verdict, affirming that both companies had indeed infringed upon the patents. Consequently, the court issued an injunction, barring them from offering, importing, and selling personal computer products within Germany until a resolution to the patent dispute is achieved in collaboration with Nokia.
Following this development, German users discovered that they were unable to access the German official websites of Acer and ASUS. Moreover, the download pages for BIOS and drivers were also rendered non-functional. At present, retail channels like Amazon are still permitted to sell their existing inventory products; however, they are prohibited from restocking with new items. Acer and ASUS are actively engaged in negotiations with Nokia regarding patent licensing and are anticipated to lodge an appeal.
