On January 22, 2026, the Regional Court of Munich in Germany handed down a verdict, stating that ASUS and Acer had infringed upon Nokia's patent for HEVC video coding (Patent No. EP 2774375). Consequently, the court issued a sales injunction, strictly prohibiting the two companies from 'offering, selling, using, importing, or stocking' the infringing products within Germany. In light of this ruling, ASUS and Acer have promptly halted the sales of their desktop and laptop computers in the German market and have removed the relevant product listings from their German online platforms. Presently, they are in the process of assessing their legal recourse and the extent to which the ruling applies. Notably, the injunction does not extend to existing retailer inventories, thereby enabling consumers to purchase the available stock in the short run. Nevertheless, the importation of new products has been entirely halted. Unless a swift resolution is reached, the German market is anticipated to face a substantial risk of supply shortages for the relevant products in the medium term.
